Sheffield has an outbreak of mumps! I have never had mumps. Should I do anything/be worried/go in??

Have you been vaccinated against it?

Hmmm. I expect that you probably haven't been, actually.

I was but that was the 70s.

It's not so much a health risk to you but if you get it you become a carrier. I wouldn't worry about it, myself.

Interesting - I caught a mild case of mumps in the early 1980s, which suggests that I wasn't vaccinated. I'm less than a year younger than you, so it could be regional variation between health authorities.

Oh, and the "health risk to you" was directed at L. It would be a risk to you, if you weren't already immune!

I'm a 60s baby with a dr father? If vaccinated I don't get it then right? That's all I care about - no time to get mumps!!

Come now! I expect that you could do a marvellous Marlon Brando (as Kurtz/Corleone) impression!

Probably not unless you're a pubescent boy.

Funny, I thought Mumps was in Oldham, not Sheffield.

Shouldn't have *anything* to worry about TBH.

My only memory is that it made me look like a hamster. I suspect it was also bloody horrible, but I was only about six at the time.

Yep, same thing happened to me at about 16. It sort of hurt but wasn't awful for me; I recall it being weird having a sore throat on the outside as well.

call NHS Direct?

Having got mumps as an adult female myself, I don't recommend it -- it's agonising, although quite rare. It might be worth asking if you can get an MMR vaccination, if you're going to have to face exposure in the workplace.
