Do cats realise other cats are like them? or do they think of themselves as small humans and other cats as as alien as dogs or gerbils/?

Certainly my cat behaves differently towards other cats than he does towards humans or dogs. And he ignores his reflection in a mirror.

Cats know that other cats are cats. And they dislike that. Of one thing I can be certain: that, unlike humans, cats do not think other cats are cute.

That reminds me of something I often think: do dogs or cats ever look at us and wonder when they're going to turn into humans like us?

Sounds it. What's the name of the book? Amazon was unhelpful when I searched for "Space-time for Springers".

It's a short story I'm afraid. I've googled it to find it in a collection, but without luck.

It used to be on scifi.com - you can find it in the Wayback Machine here.

The appreciation is heart-breaking enough. I know how good the actual story will be, how much it would depress me, which is why I'm never going to read it! I wish I'd never read The bloody Foghorn, it put a tarpaulin of greyness over me for days.

My cat truly believed he was a human, and chose to socialize exclusively with his perceived peer group.

I started to believe him to be correct.

Boof! considers Wong! to be alien, although his dear departed Orange brother was like Boof! but more so ...

Nonononononononono, you've all got it terribly wrong. Cats know that they are cats and that we are human; obviously they do, otherwise how would they know that they are the superior species?

I think anyone who claims to understand the feline mind is lying.

Cat ontology:

1. Things that you can eat
2. Things that feed you
3. Things that you can mate with
4. Things that you should run away from
5. Rocks

Note: these categories are not exclusive

My three would add 'Things that can be sat or lain on.' Ideally, these are warm and do not try to move.

Things you can play with. May also be things you can eat, of course.

My lot certainly know, and they have sub-categories, too (Best Friend! Annoying Boy Cat! My Boyfriend! Evil Invader!). Moon seeing her reflection for the first time was one of the funniest things I've ever seen -- she did the whole threat display thing then hid when the 'invader' imitated. She was 2 all of 3 months at the time, too.
