This is very interesting - empirical evidence that sprawling conurbations are associated with higher rates of obesity, ie, not walking as much.

What they still don't know of course is correlation or causation: whether naturally sedentary people move to the suburbs or those who do so, lose the use of their legs by natural lack of opportunity.

It certainly ties in with my observation that Southampton seems to have massively more overweight younger women than Edinburgh - though I'm not sure there's such an obvious disparity in the male population. (Which proves what - that obesity is more correlative with earning power than locale?) I am becoming kind of amazed at the number of meetings I go to at the uni featuring quite young women all of whom seem to be on the plumpy-dumpy side. (Not of course that I amn't a blackened pot here..)

In other not wholly unrelated news, had a lovely weekend eating my way round bits of Highfield and the New Forest with Anne and Mike WANOLJ and [livejournal.com profile] catabolism and [livejournal.com profile] estimate_lad. For the record, we went to the Fox and something (yes I know) in Lyndhurst, the very very posh "capital" of the New Forest (you could guess it wasn't an ordinary English village, when you noticed the Maserati dealership, and had it confirmed by the Ferrari one opposite), for venison pie and lovely fresh veg; and to the Red Shoot Inn near Linwood (ie middle of nowhere) where I had excellent roast beef and huge Yorkshire pud, and everyone else had rabbit (with Anne practically sucking the poor thing's bones.) On Saturday we at least had the grace to go for a long walk as well; on Sunday we just ate:-)

We saw red deer and white deer (cor!) and lots and lots of New Forest ponies, as advertised. Someone that no one of you know might conceivably have gone "Pony!!" approximately 4,379 times.. We also found a remarkably good Thai restaurant a stone's throw from my house. But I'm not allowed to tell anyone about that apparently :-) Oh, and we watched Team America again to enormous acclaim and drank a great deal of my newly arrived Virgin box of red wine and ate Cheese. Could we BE more middle aged? Don't answer that question..
