Thinking of running out to Staples to buy printer quickly - fed up with not having decent printing at home, esp whejn feeling too poorly to go into work..
Anything crucial to avoid? I just want reasonable quality printing at reasonable speed - nothing fancy tho duplo might be nice.
Does it make any difference for catridge costs which make I buy??

Unless colour is super important get a laser. I'm glad I spent the extra.

My Brother network printer/scanner/copier/fax is excellent.

I was about to say the exact same thing. My laser printer has been going for about 3 years, has only had its toner replaced once, runs quickly and well and the toner costs are reasonable in general and an absolute steal compared to the same amount of wet ink in an inkjet cartridge.

In fact, when this printer dies - or possibly when I use up all the toner I have for it (no idea how long before it needs replacing but I've got a cartridge in reserve) I might go to a colour laser anyway.

Thanks to both -\knew there was something important! I don't really need colour and can get it at work if desperate.

Yup. I got to the point that it seemed I was getting through an ink cartridge every few weeks and they're not exactly cheap.

I've been using this printer for a over a year and changed the cartridge once.

I second that. The price of lasers is so low nowadays they are very much affordable. I picked up a Samsung ML-2240 a few months ago and it's been superb. Ebuyer have them in stock for less than £45, whch is cheaper than a set of cartridges for most inkjets.

Whenever I look it seems like the Samsung's are the best bet.

yeah, samsung are v good considering the price. Quality of print is spot on. As per above, get a mono laser rather than an inkjet, you'll save heaps in consumables.

Just a note on HP devices, they're good, but often you don't get a 'full' toner cart in them, so it'll last for about half the number of pages of a regular one. That said i have an hp 1320n printer in the house, and I think it's great, also does duplex.

I get the impression that that "trick" is used by most printer manufacturers. But maybe HP is the worst.
