Actually - via Wiki - it's a band name - I knew that bit, but - "They took their name from God Speed You! Black Emperor, a little known 1976 Japanese black-and-white documentary by director Mitsuo Yanagimachi, which follows the exploits of a Japanese biker gang, the Black Emperors." That I didn't..

They are rather a fun band, actually, if you like your music murky and abstract like wot I sometimes do ;)

I wasn't sure if that was hebrew or a psychological test...

it was indeed Hebrew - I am curious if anyone can read it (I know what she says it means), or identify the quote (all from a certain Sue, whom I just met..)

Hebrew characters, in transliterated form, "tohu va vohu". This phrase is used in the Book of Jeremiah 4:23, and means loosely "without form, and void." It refers to the shape of the universe before it was given form and order.
I think tonight it would also refer to my body and my brain, in that order...

Sue said it was "chaos", basically.

Yep, the phrase is also used in Genesis 1:1 to describe the state of the world before God starts to create. It's a Hebrew hendiadys, and can either be translated as "without form, and void" as you say, or more simply as "chaos", as [livejournal.com profile] surliminal says.

Okay, now I'm trying to remember where I've heard the phrase "tohu-bohu". Is it French for hubbub?

Well see comment below by thishardenedarm - it seems to be an alternate way to pronounce the words, meaning "chaos".

Well, here's a page about the word "hubbub" that links it to the French words "brouhaha" and "tohu-bohu". I'm pretty sure I ran across the "hubbub" definition in French class. Interesting to learn it's roots in Hebrew!

Hey Guys!
Literally translated it means "chaos and desolation" but the other translations you have given all basically mean the same thing. Although I am a big fan if "God Speed You Black Emperor" It was actualy more to do with a particular period in my life and how I was feeling then.Anyone who wants to "have a go" at my latin tatt, let me know and ill stick it up here. Xtreme (or elseware )is not allowed to contribute, Nyahh!
