Hebrew characters, in transliterated form, "tohu va vohu". This phrase is used in the Book of Jeremiah 4:23, and means loosely "without form, and void." It refers to the shape of the universe before it was given form and order. I think tonight it would also refer to my body and my brain, in that order...
Yep, the phrase is also used in Genesis 1:1 to describe the state of the world before God starts to create. It's a Hebrew hendiadys, and can either be translated as "without form, and void" as you say, or more simply as "chaos", as surliminal says.
Well, here's a page about the word "hubbub" that links it to the French words "brouhaha" and "tohu-bohu". I'm pretty sure I ran across the "hubbub" definition in French class. Interesting to learn it's roots in Hebrew!
