Second Life Nudity and Code

"They simply assume that that which is not permissible is simply not coded, and therefore not possible - because that's how it works everywhere else that they have been!

A new resident running around naked with a prim penis attached is dismayed to be hauled up short by a landowner in a PG sim. They don't understand. "If it's not allowed," they demand to know, "then why does it let me??"

To be thought about when more alive..

Argh, my avatar owns some land. I was working on gadgets, inside my virtual house, when I noticed some movement and found another resident, who I didn't know, inside my living room.

Now my land is in a steampunk sim, so I quickly type, "I beg your pardon, sirrah!"

Fortunately, the person apologized, and said they didn't realize they were in my avatar's home. There's a lot of people who bring MMORPG conventions with them to SL. At least he didn't ask what I'd "drop" if he slew me.

They don't understand that people are a part of the system: how you know it's not allowed is when the people parts of the system up and slap you.

Reminds me of the attitude that if something was _really_ bad for you the government would have banned it, so cigarettes can't be that bad for you...

are you following the TestDriven.NET case?

[identity profile] surliminal.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No??

How do you know all the good stuff? Did you see the latest LOLretro stuff on Boing Boing?

mostly from reddit and slashdot :) check out the case - it's quite interesting. in short, microsoft has a free "express edition" of its visual studio ide, whose eula states that you can't write add-ons for it (they hope that people who want to use third party add-ons will upgrade to the full visual studio). the testdriven.net dude broke the eula by making his product operate on all versions of visual studio, including the express edition.

(and yes, i saw the lolretro stuff :) i love boing boing)
