Smile Like You Mean It

That's it really - came on the radio and I thought "that's a good motto". Could add it to "dance like no one's watching" in fact.
Any lines from songs you'd quite like to take as personal mottos today?
I always liked that Ally McBeal thing about having a theme tune actually - tho I never could quite work out what mine was. Anyone got a theme tune today? ("Total Partial Eclipse of the Heart"? :-)
The sun's out for what feels like the first time in years, and the shoulder that I pulled Sunday night and has been agony since more or less, has receded to mere soreness-achiness and stiffness (tho still wo betide anyone pulling out behind me when I'm driving, as twisting my neck to look behind is still almost impossible - perhaps my theme film title should be Don't Look Now.) Last night I had the most ridiculously gluttonous Chinese with
thishardenedarm before he went off to his Big Interview in London - mmm, crispy duck and pancakes at the Szechuan House. And that was only the starter :-) Then we had gong bao chicken, Singapore noodles, lamb in black bean sauce and aubergine szechuan style, and I embarrassed V with trying out my 4 words of Mandarin. (Lucky him - I'd forgotten I still knew the words for old Mandarin swearword, "your mouth is full of penis hairs".) Hadn't been there since it used to be at the bottom of my road (it's near Tollcross now) and it hasn't changed - still full of real Chinese people, would be student Mandarin speakers (it's the only non Cantonese speaking restaurant in town) and old white commie fellow travellers. Very nostalgic, and fucking good food.
I haven't really managed to get any work done last 3 days between agony, lack of sleep and peripheral emotional upset, so I guess it's back to the grind now. At least the adoption Bill's out, which makes one of my jobs much easier - yay. Next: sorting out my sleep schedule. Don't blink ..

"Never trust a man in a blue trench coat, never drive a car when you're dead" - Tom Waits.
"Never trust a crown-green bowler under thirty" - Nigel Blackwell.
"How many clever men have called the sun a fool?" - Pete Atkin.
"There's no room for enigmas in built-up areas" - Nigel Blackwell.
"My smile is stuck; I cannot go back to your frownland" - Don van Vliet.
There's one I'd love to live by, which comes from a favourite author:
"Work as if you lived in the early days of a better nation." - Alasdair Gray.

"Send lawyers, guns and money" - Warren Zevon.
That should be ME!

Date: 2006-03-29 11:00 am (UTC)Not a personal motto, but related to the above: "I feel like dancing on my own / where no-one knows me and where I / can cause offence just by the way I look." (Belle & Sebastian, 'There's Too Much Love'.)

Date: 2006-03-29 12:59 pm (UTC)I admit that I ain't no angel
I admit that I ain't no saint
I'm selfish and I'm cruel and I'm blind
If I exorcise my devils
Well my angels may leave too
When they leave they're so hard to find
Tom Waits, again.
I also place great faith in Billy Bragg's excellent observation:
"As brother Barry said when he married Marion, the wife has three great attributes -- intelligence, a Swiss Army knife, and charm".
Any man on the hunt for a mate should take that advice.

Date: 2006-03-29 02:35 pm (UTC)Any song-derived personal motto I might have will depend heavily on what I slip into my pocket CD player as I leave the house in the morning. Today, it seems, I'm stuck with Kristin Hersh's "I can't drink this coffee 'til I've put you in my closet", from Your Ghost on Hips And Makers

Date: 2006-03-29 05:55 pm (UTC)Danny boy, I know you got time, but what are you waiting for,
Anyway the dust may just blow away, if you wait for a windy day
But you may find the chance has passed you by;
I can't do the walk
I can't do the talk
I can't be your friend
Unless I pretend
So give me the song and i'll sing it like I mean it
So give me the words and i'll say them like I mean it
