.. or, the End of a Perfect Day (no irony..)

There are dramatic pools of blood outside my front door - I ought to go clear em up but I'm worried if I do I'll faint. Where is CSI edinburgh when you could really do with it? How much blood loss actually matters?

I'm also considering ringing NHS Direct to find out if there are any arteries in the top of the foot (if it was the bottom , I'd be seriously worried) - but am worried they'll tell me to go to A & E which is the last thing I want at the end of a hot day!

In the meantime that Harvard conference t shirt I never wear has finally come good as emergency bandaging..

EDIT: this by the way is the OTHER foot from the one whose ankle I sprained yesterday. Seeing me hobbling to doctors tomorrow is going to rival Jake the Peg.

Ah yikes! What happened?!! How deep is the cut? If it's bad enough to require stiches/steri strips you should always go to the hospital asap so the skin doesn't shrivel up...

Ah shit. Stabbed foot with very long piece glass which with any luck has gone in one side and out the other.. NHS Direct said (a) no I wasn't bleeding to death (b) get tetanus. Helluva lotta blood tho - I've just mopped it up (in stairway) so as not to scare the horses. Both me n cats v impressed.

Asked if it would affect ability to go to beach and she said no, just wash any sand out!!!!

Can GPs do stitches? I don't want to go to ERI - it'll be 100 degrees..

oooo, sounds nasty :S

As far as I know, GPs don't do stitches, so it looks like you'll have to go to ERI. There's also a minor injuries clinic at the Western but I'm not sure what counts as minor...

Am glad they said it was okay to go to the beach though!

They had to paper stitch it - so at least I avoid A & E (unless it goes yellow and falls off in nwext 3 days :D

Both me n cats v impressed.

Cats always like blood and distress... The two I used to have would invariably come and watch me with a slightly predatory curiosity if I happened to injure myself in a particularly interesting way.

You're up to date with anti-tetanus provision?

They don't call it Harvard Crimson for nothing.

Since your main concern is fainting from looking at the blood, rather than fainting from losing it, I think you'll be okay. Have you got your feet well washed and bandaged with antiseptic ointment?

Ahem. Am doctor's daughter. Do not faint from LOOKING at blood. Volume lost was major concern..

You're supposed to elevate the injured part to minimise bleeding ... so yes, the medical advice is to spend the evening with your legs in the air.

Yup, you get first aider gold star!

Any advice on getting blood out of carpets?

if it does need stitches, there's a small injury clinic at the Western General Hospital which takes about 4 hours less than ERI and is much pleasanter.

Cold very salty water, before the blood dries, and one of those cunning vacuum cleaners that can suck up water as well.

Or a new carpet, and good house/contents insurance.

I've just done the cold salty water thing on skirt and top - too late for the carpet. Oh well, it's pissy anyway.

We'd make a good team we would :-)

But fuck there's blood EVERYWHERE. I'll never laugh at crime scene dramas again..

I don't know about the amount of blood you have to deal with, but I've had very good luck using hydrogen peroxide to shift small blood stains.

And it foams up so fun, too.

Oh dear. Though your title makes me envision CSI meets The League of Gentleman.

Feet bleed spectacularly, don't they?
