I turn on the computer after 4 days away and WHAT??!!

When did my nice predictable IE become a tabbed browser, where have all the icons that aren't Google Toolbar gone and where where are my Links at the top?

How am I going to find LJ in the morning NOW????

Damn them! damn them all to hell...

(is it just me???)

IE has finally discovered tabbed browsing? It's a bleedin' miracle!

Someone 'upgraded' your PC for you?

I think that's doable under some of the recent legislation, isn't it?

IE7 was issued as a high priority update to Windows XP, so anything running XP with the default settings and a decent Internet connection is getting upgraded automagically.

Ah, yes.

One of those settings I immediately disable, so I tend to forget it was ever an option.

I got called downstaris today by a colleague who reckoned that using my program had caused his PC to reboot. What I then spotted was the MS Update tooltray icon showing a message "I have just rebooted your machine".

Duh - so how come it's only me freaking?
And how do get my Links back at the top of the window???
(Thanks BTW. It must be nice to know everything..)

It is not only you freaking. My bookmarks all got alphabetized, which is not at all the way I had them and not particularly useful. But there is a little star over on the left-hand side of the screen (under the Yahoo Y) that still has the old list. Maybe yours is different.

I have Mozilla Firefox on the computer upstairs, and I think learning new software packages is not my most favorite hobby.

And how come all these fonts have changed? Duh. Big and legible, how nice.

I happen to like Opera. And these days, it's gone free (even ad-free). But Firefox would do.

As pointed out above, You Have Been Upgraded (to IE version 7).

Under the hood, it's a big improvement. Far from perfect, but a big step in the right direction. From the user perspective, I reckon they took a bad UI and made it worse.

Regardless of whether you think it's better or not, they certainly have managed to make it radically different from what was there before, which will probably alienate and confuse an awful lot of people (to date, about 15% of UK IE users, I think, with a few percent more every week).

Tools->toolbars->links should get your link bar back.

Tools->toolbars->customise... should assist with getting some of the other icons back, though they've done quite a bit of furniture moving, and your precise choice of widgets might not be available any more.

Righ-clicking on an empty space (i.e. not a tab) in the tab bar will let you toggle large icons on/off, if you're that way inclined.

You *may* want to tweak Tools->Menubar to get File, Edit, View and friends back. Then again, given where it puts them, you may not.

You're right - it's HORRIBLE! (It just upgraded me without asking. Dammit)
Whatever happened to moving stuff around on the toolbar, the bastards? Why is it giving me f-ugly fonts no matter which ones I select? WHY DOES MICROSOFT HATE ME SO MUCH?

OK, those are all rhetorical questions.

I know my Windows box downloaded IE7 but I don't let it loose. I know Firefox isn't perfect but I distrust it slightly less than IE...
